Analysis of infrared optical polishing effluents and reduction of COD and TSS levels by ultrafiltration and coagulation/flocculation
Samples of polishing effluent produced during infrared optics manufacture were analyzed. Their particle size, composition, Zeta potential, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), and settleable solids were determined. Feasibility of treatment methods such as ultrafiltration (UF) and coagulation/flocculation was investigated to reduce both COD and TSS. It was found that effluents consisted of a suspension of micro- and nanoparticles. Effluent particle size distribution reflected the removal rate of the originating polishing process. Their composition was primarily germanium and other polished substrates as well as polishing abrasives. The effluent Zeta potential was highly negative and prevented particle settling. COD of all specimens was very high, which prevented sewage discharge. Laboratory-scale trials using UF showed substantial COD abatement of up to 74.1%. TSS was reduced to zero after UF. Comparable coagulation/flocculation COD abatement was demonstrated for the highest COD sample
SinEx DB: a database for single exon coding sequences in mammalian genomes
Indexación: Web of Science.Eukaryotic genes are typically interrupted by intragenic, noncoding sequences termed introns. However, some genes lack introns in their coding sequence (CDS) and are generally known as 'single exon genes' (SEGs). In this work, a SEG is defined as a nuclear, protein-coding gene that lacks introns in its CDS. Whereas, many public databases of Eukaryotic multi-exon genes are available, there are only two specialized databases for SEGs. The present work addresses the need for a more extensive and diverse database by creating SinEx DB, a publicly available, searchable database of predicted SEGs from 10 completely sequenced mammalian genomes including human. SinEx DB houses the DNA and protein sequence information of these SEGs and includes their functional predictions (KOG) and the relative distribution of these functions within species. The information is stored in a relational database built with My SQL Server 5.1.33 and the complete dataset of SEG sequences and their functional predictions are available for downloading. SinEx DB can be interrogated by: (i) a browsable phylogenetic schema, (ii) carrying out BLAST searches to the in-house SinEx DB of SEGs and (iii) via an advanced search mode in which the database can be searched by key words and any combination of searches by species and predicted functions. Clustering-Based Materialized View Selection in Data Warehouses
Materialized view selection is a non-trivial task. Hence, its complexity must
be reduced. A judicious choice of views must be cost-driven and influenced by
the workload experienced by the system. In this paper, we propose a framework
for materialized view selection that exploits a data mining technique
(clustering), in order to determine clusters of similar queries. We also
propose a view merging algorithm that builds a set of candidate views, as well
as a greedy process for selecting a set of views to materialize. This selection
is based on cost models that evaluate the cost of accessing data using views
and the cost of storing these views. To validate our strategy, we executed a
workload of decision-support queries on a test data warehouse, with and without
using our strategy. Our experimental results demonstrate its efficiency, even
when storage space is limited
The anatomy of exhumed river-channel belts: Bedform to belt‐scale river kinematics of the Ruby Ranch Member, Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation, Utah, USA
Many published interpretations of ancient fluvial systems have relied on observations of extensive outcrops of thick successions. This paper, in contrast, demonstrates that a regional understanding of palaeoriver kinematics, depositional setting and sedimentation rates can be interpreted from local sedimentological measurements of bedform and barform strata. Dune and bar strata, channel planform geometry and bed topography are measured within exhumed fluvial strata exposed as ridges in the Ruby Ranch Member of the Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation, Utah, USA. The ridges are composed of lithified stacked channel belts, representing at least five or six re‐occupations of a single‐strand channel. Lateral sections reveal well‐preserved barforms constructed of subaqueous dune cross‐sets. The topography of palaeobarforms is preserved along the top surface of the outcrops. Comparisons of the channel‐belt centreline to local palaeotransport directions indicate that channel planform geometry was preserved through the re‐occupations, rather than being obscured by lateral migration. Rapid avulsions preserved the state of the active channel bed and its individual bars at the time of abandonment. Inferred minimum sedimentation durations for the preserved elements, inferred from cross‐set thickness distributions and assumed bedform migration rates, vary within a belt from one to ten days. Using only these local sedimentological measurements, the depositional setting is interpreted as a fluvial megafan, given the similarity in river kinematics. This paper provides a systematic methodology for the future synthesis of vertical and planview data, including the drone‐equipped 2020 Mars Rover mission, to exhumed fluvial and deltaic strata

Magnon valley Hall effect in CrI3-based vdW heterostructures
Magnonic excitations in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW)
ferromagnet CrI3 are studied. We find that bulk magnons exhibit a non-trivial
topological band structure without the need for Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM)
interaction. This is shown in vdW heterostructures, consisting of single-layer
CrI3 on top of different 2D materials as MoTe2, HfS2 and WSe2. We find
numerically that the proposed substrates modify substantially the out-of-plane
magnetic anisotropy on each sublattice of the CrI3 subsystem. The induced
staggered anisotropy, combined with a proper band inversion, leads to the
opening of a topological gap of the magnon spectrum. Since the gap is opened
non-symmetrically at the K+ and K- points of the Brillouin zone, an imbalance
in the magnon population between these two valleys can be created under a
driving force. This phenomenon is in close analogy to the so-called valley Hall
effect (VHE), and thus termed as magnon valley Hall effect (MVHE). In linear
response to a temperature gradient we quantify this effect by the evaluation of
the temperature-dependence of the magnon thermal Hall effect. These findings
open a different avenue by adding the valley degrees of freedom besides the
spin, in the study of magnons
Superfluid current disruption in a chain of weakly coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates
We report the experimental observation of the disruption of the superfluid
atomic current flowing through an array of weakly linked Bose-Einstein
condensates. The condensates are trapped in an optical lattice superimposed on
a harmonic magnetic potential. The dynamical response of the system to a change
of the magnetic potential minimum along the optical lattice axis goes from a
coherent oscillation (superfluid regime) to a localization of the condensates
in the harmonic trap ("classical" insulator regime). The localization occurs
when the initial displacement is larger than a critical value or, equivalently,
when the velocity of the wavepacket's center of mass is larger than a critical
velocity dependent on the tunnelling rate between adjacent sites.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
